LINE BENEFIT FOR 42ND STREET WORKSHOP
OCTOBER 29,2001
The
benefit, on Monday, October 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., honored the
Workshop's three founders - Sam Schacht, Jim DeMarse and Michelle
Bouchard - and helped the Workshop move from its quarters at a
five-flight walk-up at 432 West 42nd Street, to an expanded,
elevator-access. Artistic Director Tony Sportiello, says
"The Workshop plans to produce from four to eight main stage
productions
annually and provide a full slate of playwriting and acting
classes,
seminars and community outreach programs."
Since its
founding as a theatre "gym" by Schacht, DeMarse and Bouchard
in1994,
The Workshop has been home to hundreds of emerging and established
actors,
playwrights and directors, who have met weekly to develop new
plays,
subsequently staged for the public in weekend performances.
Among the
group's more notable members have been writer Murray Schisgal
("Luv" on Broadway and co-author of "Tootsie") and famed comedian
and
"The View" star, Joy Behar.
"We've
been very fortunate to attract terrific talent to our company," says
Sportiello.
"Now it's time to give this talent a proper home to shine."
Shine it
did, with waiter service offering sweet potato biscuita with country
ham and turkey, bruschetta, tampinade and other delicacies, an open
bar, the live jazz of the Leif Arntzen Band, and the comedy and skits
of The Workshop's funniest members, including: Emily Zacharias, who
played for two years in "Jekyll and Hyde" on Broadway; Gerianne
Raphael, who portrayed Aldonza on Broadway in "Man of La Mancha";
Peter Waldren; Jill Kotler;
Charles Gerber; Jane Gennaro; Peter Newman; and MC'd by Emmy-Award
winning host
and Former Radio City Rockette, Jennifer
Jiles.
